A Conversation on Black Mentorship and Networking

Growing up I’ve had my share of role models and celebrities that have inspired me. However, this inspiration seemed like I was looking through a glass door. The big house, the trophies, awards, and accolades all filled my eyes with wonder and eventually yearning. I wanted to achieve success in my career just like everyone else, but I was just another freshman starting her college career completely lost on what the roadmap to success even looked like. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity, my sophomore year in college, to experience the value of mentorship. My boss at my first Public Relations internship, was one of the first women who taught me and guided me through the career field I had chosen.

Coach Kenya and Wayno both realized the importance of pouring back into their community. Wayno is the Vice president of A&R at Asylum records, Founder and CEO of Triangle Offense, and he’s also one of the hosts on Complex News’ Hip Hop debate show Everyday Struggle. Coach Kenya is a media maven. She’s a Marketing Executive at iHeartRadio and has been there for over ten years, a physical instructor for Exos, and a CPT coach for Nasm fitness. Free Throw Friday’s allow artists and entrepreneurs to form a community around like-minded peers, where they can safely ask for advice regarding their careers in a judgement free zone for one hour.
